since your are not trying to play the latest games, you should be able to do it within your budget, check the link below for a good gaming build guide. you can save even more money by recycling old components, consider using a used CRT monitor for starters, they can be had very cheap at thrift stores. you also do not need the latest video card. a proven, last generation card, like the nvidia 8800gt, should do just fine for most games at medium settings. Aim for a system that plays with good FPS at medium, which is the benchmark that consoles like the xbox360 use.

You will not find a gaming computer at 500 bucks… However, like those guys above me, you can make one, considering you have the skills to do so. But yeah, a good gaming computer is in the thousands at least.

Unfortunately, gaming computers are prohibitively expensive when pre-built. I would find a friend that knows a lot about computers, and talk to them, and maybe they will help you build one. I think you would also be surprised how easy it is to build one on your own. A good, pre-made, gaming rig will probably cost you about $2000 - $3000 right now, but you could build one just as good for about $800 or so. If you want help putting one together, I can give you some instructions. Also, if you build it on your own, you can use parts from your old dell to keep the cost down, and boost the performance.

Building a computer is not like building a piece of furniture. It requires special knowledge of information processing and electronics. Sorry to tell you, but its not that easy. I recommend you start digging for as much information as you can; this will be a tough project for you.

If you don’t want to overclock get a Dell XPS 410/420, they’re pretty good when it comes to gaming.
